The diamond jubilee celebrations of the Dental Council of India and the 16th national conference of Indian Society of Oral Implantologists got off to a grand start at the Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital, near here, on Saturday.

The pre-conference being inaugurated by Dr Sukhwinder Singh, Vice-Chairman of Gian Sagar Educational and Charitable Trust.

Inaugurating the pre-conference Dr Sukhwinder Singh underlined the role of dental surgeons in the cosmetic as also treatment surgery. He said that the cosmetic surgery was catching the fancy of the people and the role of the dental surgeons was increasing in this field.

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root replacement and is used in prosthetic dentistry to support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth, he said.

Dr Sukhwinder Singh lighted the ceremonial lamp to mark inauguration of the pre-conference. He said that dental implants had revolutionised dental treatment as it was a major reconstructive surgery for the benefit of accident cases also. Dr J. S. Batth, organizing secretary of the conference, said academic presentations were made at the pre-conference besides two live surgeries were also shown. He said that around 50 exhibitors were participating in the trade exhibition by displaying their latest instruments and equipments in implant dentistry.

The diamond jubilee celebrations of the Dental Council of india would be inaugurated at NIPER, Mohali tomorrow by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal who would be the chief guest at the inaugural function.

Dr S. P. S. Sodhi, Organising Chairman of the conference, here today said that Dr S. S. Gill, Vice-Chancellor, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot and Dr P. Rama Rao, Director NIPER, shall be the guests of honour. Dr Anil Kohli, President of Dental Council of India would attend as patron-in-chief. Around 700 delegates from across the country are scheduled to participate in the deliberations during the conference.

Barinder Bhangoo, Chairperson of the Gian Sagar Educational and Charitable Trust, Dr Sukhwinder Singh, Vice-Chairman of the Trust, and Harnam Singh, President of the Trust, said that the trust was committed to making the Gian Sagar Dental College and Hospital the best hospital in the country. They said that state of the art equipment had been made available in the dental college and hospital.
