Free Dental Services in Columbus, Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Going to the dentist or doctor is almost a financial impossibility for people without health insurance or high deductibles.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

Seven Columbus dentists are offering free dental care Thursday as part of the 4th annual Doctors With A Heart Day.

From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., dentists at Northstone Dental Group, 1730 Schrock Rd., will offer free dental services on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The services are for both adults and children.

It’s no secret many people simply dread going to the dentist. Megan Kennedy, though, couldn’t wait.

Kennedy lost a filling in her front tooth about 10 months ago.

“I had this awful looking gap. It just looked horrible, and it felt horrible. It made me really self-conscious,” she said.

Kennedy wanted to fix it, but she doesn’t have insurance.

A filling and root canal later, Kennedy couldn’t believe her smile.

“I’m just so glad they’re doing this, and I’m sure they’re helping out so many other people,” Kennedy said.

Dentist Josh Halderman said they hope to treat 200 people. The group helped 180 people in 2008.
Some of the services being offered include cleanings, one new filling (or fixing a broken one), fixing ill-fitting dentures or pulling one painful or broken tooth.

“We do a lot of work here—looking at cosmetics and some other aspects of dentistry—and those things kind of keep us in check and give us a chance to see how many people are out there with issues they’ve been putting up with a long time,” Halderman said.

“It’s something any office can do, and hopefully we might inspire some other offices to take part,” Halderman said.

Extreme Home Makeover for Mouths : A Dental Cosmetic Surgery News

A new program offered by a San Clemente dentist is like "Extreme Home Makeover" for mouths.

Dr. Jon Marashi's first mouth-makeover patient was missing molars, her mouth had been damaged by faulty dental work, she had cavities and her gums bled like crazy.

On top of that, Sofik Seboian, a Calabasas housekeeper originally from Armenia, had endured difficult times. When she was 3, her mother was killed when a train crashed into a bus. She was one of five children and her father couldn't afford to get their teeth fixed. She got married at 18 and, after having three children, her husband left her.

"When you're fortunate and you don't have issues in your life, you hear this stuff and, my God," Marashi said in an interview after he had turned Seboian's messed-up mouth into a shiny porcelain masterpiece. "You think, 'How much can one person take?'"

Marashi fixed up Seboian's smile as part of Smiles for Life, a new charitable program led by the California Center for Advanced Dental Studies, a continuing-education group for dentists.
"This is an absolute dream come true," said Seboian, whose children are 8, 17 and 19. "I never thought I'd have a beautiful smile."

Seboian's work was valued at $40,000. The porcelain veneers used in the surgery were donated by Frontier Dental Laboratories, a Brea-based company that partners with the Center for Advanced Dental Studies.

The center has 11 directors nationwide and abroad, and each has agreed to donate one new smile per year to a less-fortunate person who shows the promise of benefiting greatly from the mouth makeover.

It's not unusual for professional dental associations to give away free smiles. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has a program that gives free makeovers to domestic-violence victims, and the American Dental Association has a program focused on children.

But Smiles for Life is different because it targets a wide swath of people. The only requirements are that an applicant show he or she really needs the surgery and deserves it more than others.
"This is an opportunity that flat-out doesn't exist anywhere else," said Marashi, 36. "Where else can such a large demographic of people get this?"

Marashi said the program is especially unique because the program directors pay for the makeover work out of their own pockets, despite the economic crisis.

"Who gives anything right now? Do you know any plastic surgeons right now giving out pro bono work when they're trying to pay office bills?" Marashi said. "Really what's in it for me by spending all this time and all this money, what I get back in return is that I know I did the right thing."

Marashi, who has offices in San Clemente and Newport Beach, targeted homeless, drug-related and domestic-violence shelters in Orange County. He got about 20 applicants. One woman, who had no teeth, said that if she had a new smile, she could apply for a job.

"I liked the ability to look at it on a case-by-case basis," Marashi said, noting that each program director carries out his or her own search for makeover winners.

He selected Seboian, who was referred to him by a patient, because she had overcome dental and life problems and was still a constructive member of society. He said he believed she was applying for the right reasons and not just looking for a freebie.

"It wasn't just go to the dentist and zip, zap, get it done," Seboian said. "There were a lot of emotions in that office."

After her last appointment, Seboian cried for hours. Now when she visits Marashi, she constantly wants to hug him, he said.

Marashi has started reviewing applications for next year.

"I wish that every doctor would take an initiative, even if they just change one life in the world," Seboian said. "Wouldn't it be nice if they made this law that doctors had to take care of one person a year for free? I wish all doctors would copy Marashi."

Cosmetic dentistry refers to when you do anything beyond the normal health of your teeth, including fixing crooked teeth and gaps, as well as changing teeth discoloration or chipped teeth. If you are thinking of having your smile worked on, here is an overview of what cosmetic dentistry and cosmetic teeth whitening can do for you.
One thing cosmetic dentistry can do for you is to whiten your teeth. This can be either done in a Chicago cosmetic dentist office, a cosmetic dentist Madison Avenue office or a Beverly Hills cosmetic dental office – virtually everywhere in the country today.
Or you can get over the counter, do it yourself teeth whitening kits that are used in your home – which type you should chose really depends upon how discolored your teeth are and how confident you can do these home treatments yourself.
Porcelain veneers is another type of cosmetic dentistry procedure. This is when a veneer is placed over the front of the teeth, to hide any cracks or chips. Dental veneers can also be used to create a whiter smile and overlay gaps.
If you have missing teeth, then dental implants may be a good option for you. Artificial roots are anchored into the jaw and then fitted with a prosthetic tooth.
For gapping teeth, dental whitening bonding can be used to apply a tooth colored composite to the teeth. Then the material can be polished and shaped to look like the rest of your teeth.
When you have a cavity to be filled, ask for the tooth colored fillings. This may be more appealing than the traditional silver fillings that are very noticeable.
An attractive and durable option to getting fillings or crowns on your teeth are porcelain inlays and overlays to repair any damaged teeth.
If your tooth is badly decayed and a filling won’t take care of the problem, then a dental crown is usually a form of cosmetic dentistry. After the decay has been removed and the tooth has been properly prepared, the crown will be fitted creating a kind of cosmetic dentures.
Dental bridges are a piece of dental equipment that are made of two crowns and a prosthetic tooth. They are used to cover the gap when teeth are missing.
To find, for instance, the right Ft Myers cosmetic dentist or a Palm Beach cosmetic dentist, make sure you do your homework in advance. They should be certified by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). Ask to see before and after pictures of several patients they have worked on.
If you live in Colorado, then check each Colorado cosmetic dentist references and try to find someone who has done the actual procedures you are looking at having done on your teeth.
Finding an affordable cosmetic dentists’ doesn’t have to be a daunting task either. Just do your home work in advance. If you live in San Diego, then ask for referrals from your family dentist as well as friends and family members who may know of a good San Diego cosmetic dentist. Don’t go to the lowest priced dentist just because they apparently offer a better deal. Remember, you usually get what you pay for and this really applies when getting affordable cosmetic dentistry.
A good cosmetic dentist’ will be able to help you make the best and most informed decisions when it comes to your smile and your teeth. Your smile and confidence are big things to trust somebody with. So be sure your trust goes to the best cosmetic dentists you can find.

Kids, Ditch the Candy This Halloween says Anti-Decay Movement

One area dentist is redefining the phrase "put your money where your mouth is." This Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to Dr. Nathan Tilman in Newport and receive $1 per pound. Dr. Nathan Tilman is leading this anti-decay movement by giving away dollars and electric glowing toothbrushes in exchange for cavity-provoking candy.

"Ditch the candy, that's what we're saying. Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing daily are great preventative measures, but doing away with excess sweets altogether would really give your teeth a healthy boost," says Dr. Nathan Tilman from Newport Family and Cosmetic Dentistry. "Kids can still have all of the fun of trick-or-treating, and now their piggy banks will benefit as well. Plus, these glowing brushes we're giving out are really cool-they're like light sabers for your mouth."

Global sugar consumption for kids' increases by about 2% annually and currently sits at 50 million tons per year, which means parents need to be sure their kids teeth are being cared for more than ever. Candy, as well as hurting children's teeth, can lead to hyperactivity and weight gain. In some cases, the wrong types of candy can also lead to broken teeth and damaged braces.

This is our second annual Halloween Candy Buy-Back program. Candy will be collected at Newport Family and Cosmetic Dentistry the day after Halloween from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Dr. Tilman will also collect on Mon and Tue Nov. 2nd and 3rd after school until 5. The candy must be unopened. Please no bites. It will then be shipped to troops overseas.

Dr. Tilman is available to provide more information at 401-846-3801, or visit Newport Family and Cosmetic Dentistry on-line at www.smile-newport.com

Cosmetic dentistry (CD) involves dental procedures with the aim of improving the overall look of your smile. CD aims to create a beautiful smile which can have numerous knock on effects in an individual's self-confidence, self-esteem and even personal relationships. TV shows such as "extreme makeover" has created a public awareness about CD and its accessibility.
Why have Cosmetic Dentistry?

Are you unhappy with your smile? Do you want to change your smile to improve the colour, shape or length of your teeth, change the appearance of your gums or lips to give your overall smile a more aesthetically appealing look?
A recent survey revealed that:

• Over 75% of people don't feel confident to smile in photographs

• Over 45% of people make judgments about people by the look of their smile

• Over 75% of people think that a beautiful smile helps people psychologically

• Over 65% of people think that an attractive smile helps romantically
Cosmetic dentistry or smile makeover involves one or more cosmetic dental procedures to improve the aesthetics of your smile in a way that you want. CD or a smile makeover to one person could mean something completely different to another person and it is a very individual choice e.g. some people want the perfectly white "Hollywood smile" with pearly white porcelain veneers. Other people may just want a simple improvement such as the replacement of silver fillings with cosmetic white fillings and teeth whitening. What ever the reasons for you disliking your smile there are many different ways in which you can improve it using modern CD:
Cosmetic dentistry for Crooked teeth.

Crooked teeth can be straightened with Invisalign braces or conventional orthodontics. They can also be covered with porcelain veneers for a faster solution, often referred to as "instant orthodontics".
Cosmetic Dentistry for broken teeth.

Chipped, broken teeth can be repaired - the treatment available will depend on the extent of damage but the options include cosmetic bonding, porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns.
Cosmetic dentistry for Missing teeth.

Missing teeth can be replaced - gaps between your teeth can cause functional problems as well as being unsightly. Solutions include dental Implants, a dental bridge or a denture.
Cosmetic dentistry and 'gappy teeth'.

Gaps between your teeth can be closed to give your smile a more evenlook. This can be achieved instantly with porcelain veneers. Orthodontics can also be used to move the teeth and close the gaps between them.
Cosmetic dentistry for Gummy smile

If you have a gummy smile, this can easily be remedied by surgical or laser gum contouring. This is known as a Gum Lift.
Cosmetic dentistry for Discoloured teeth.

If you are not satisfied with the colour of your teeth or if you have badly stained teeth they can be treated with professional teeth whitening.
Cosmetic treatments for facial lines

If you have deep smile lines, frown lines or lips that have lost their fullness, these can all be improved using a combination of Botox and dermal filler treatments.
The end result of CD or a smile makeover for many people is to have a smile to be proud of that is straight, white and perfectly aligned.
How much does a cosmetic dentistry or a smile makeover cost?

This will depend on many factors:

• The treatment required

• The skill of your cosmetic dentist

• The clinic where the treatment is carried out

• The quality of materials used for your work
